Fenghuang Ancient City is in southwest Hunan, and belongs to the Western Hunan Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture. There is a mountain which is like a flying phoenix in the southwest Fenghuang City, hence obtaining its name.
Fenghuang Ancient City was once praised as the most beautiful city in China by the famous New Zealand writer Alley Rewi. It can date back to 1704 (Qing Dynasty), after 25 years of vicissitudes, it is still attractive. There are lots of buildings of ancient features, such as bluestone alley, Houses of Wooden Structure Projecting, Zhaoyang Palace, the Ancestral Hall of Yang Family, former home of Shen Congwen, Tianwang Temple, an so on.
Fenghuang ancient city is divided into two parts: new city and old city. The old city is near the mountain and by the river. Huanan Mountain is against the ancient gate which could date back to Qing Dynasty. Under the north gate, there is a narrow wooden bridge whose pier is of stone and was the only way to get off the city at that time. It is just the sense of heaviness and history that attract millions of tourists all over the world.
