The Cemetery of Confucius (Konglin), a key cultural relic in China, is the cemetery of Confucius and his descendants. Located to the north of Qufu and covering more than 3,000 acres, this artificial garden is China's largest, most historic and best-preserved clan grave complex. Later, as Confucius’ status raises, the scale of this cemetery also grows. In December 1994, it was included in the "World Heritage List". The enclosure of the forest is made by gray bricks, and old trees can be found everywhere. More than 10,000 mature trees give the cemetery a forest-like appearance. Legend has it that Confucius’ disciples had planted trees from their hometown in the cemetery, that’s why we can find different kinds of trees there. Tourists can visit numerous gravess, stelas and stones in the forest. The oldest graves date back to the Zhou Dynasty, the most recent of which belong to descendants in the 76th and 78th generation. Despite the tombs of Kongzi, Kongli and Kongji, it’s also worthwhile to discover the carved stones of some Chinese most famous calligraphers, for example, LI Dongyang, Yan Song, KANG Youwei and so on, which gives us the reason why the Cemetery of Confucius is a also called “the Forest of Stelas”. The other main attractions in the region include Shendao, Zhushui Bridge, Xiang Palace and the tomb of Confucius.
