With a view to fine dining in Shanghai

With a view to fine dining in Shanghai

After its two-year long renovation, the Bund, once again, is the kind of world-class landmark that Shanghai is famous for. And like any great destination, a large part of its charm is the spectacular scenery. The Global Times took a trip down to the waterside and discovered some of the best restaurants to appreciate the city's stunning panorama.

Top of the world

Views from the Shanghai World Financial Center can be enjoyed for the price of a cup of coffee - if you don't fancy forking out 150 yuan to visit the observation deck. But an even better idea is to enjoy a meal at the 87th floor restaurant in the Park Hyatt Hotel. After passing through the stringent security checks to get there (considerably beefed up for the Expo) you'll probably feel you deserve it. The floor is divided into two sections. The Living Room, serving teas, coffees and desserts, has breathtaking views over Puxi, with the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Jinmao Tower right under your nose. The Dining Room, with a full a la carte and set menus, looks out over Pudong.

But for the best high-altitude views of the city, take yourself up to floors 91 to 93 where the three-level 100 Century Avenue Restaurant is sited.

Tony Chi, the New-York based designer of the Park Hyatt, describes 100 Century Avenue as a 'mountain cottage.' And with an onyx mosaic floor, cloud-inspired murals, and six open show kitchens with roaring fires, it's easy to see his point.

The meticulous cooking skills on view enhance these jaw-dropping views. Executive chef German-born Andreas Fuchs was previously at the Park Hyatt in Sanya, and upholds the luxury chain's global cuisine concept of being able to order Western, Chinese and Japanese food all under one (very lofty) roof.

"We take great care sourcing our ingredients and our style of large dishes meant for sharing has proved very popular," he told the Global Times.

How to get the best view: go on a clear day that is neither foggy nor hazy. Night views are also commanding, but more restricted.

Get a window seat: book two weeks ahead to ensure a window view at night.

What to order: the spicy chicken or the steak.

Average price: 450 - 700 yuan per person

Address: 100 Century Avenue, near Dongtai Road.

Tel: 6888 1234
