The Mogao Grottoes is located on the bluff on the Echoing-Sand Mountain, 25 kilometres from the Dunhuang City. In this 50-metre high, 1680-metre wide area, 735 caves are scatted with 2415 painted sculptures made of mud. That's why this place has another name: the cave of 1,000 Buddhas. Also, the 45,000 square metres of the mural painting make this place the largest holy place of Buddhist art in the whole world. Despite the damage caused by the nature and human, the figure of Buddha, flying Apsaras and the fairy maidens are still smiling, flying and floating on the wall, through space and thousands years of time. This most valuable cultural discovery of 20th century has another name, the Orient Louvre. The massive scale is due to the contribution since the Former Qin period, AD 366, and the following dynasties.
