Turpan Transportation
Turpan is located in the eastern part of Xinjiang Province and is located 80 meters below sea level. It is known as the Land of Fire because of the intense summer temperature and the dry weather which in turn provides a favorable condition for the growth of the famous Turpan grapes. Although it is far from the eastern developed cities in China, the relatively convenient transportation won’t make it hard for tourists to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Turpan.
By air
Turpan Airport (also known as Jiaohe Airport) has the lowest elevation among all the airports in China and was put into place in May 2010. The completion of this airport has made it much more convenient for domestic and foreign tourists to travel here which has definitely stimulated the local tourism industry. Turpan Airport is located about 10 km northwest away from Turpan city centre and is about 165 kilometres from Urumqi (the capital of Xinjiang province). Therefore this makes it possible for Turpan Airport to be the nearest alternate airport for Urumqi. Before the completion of Turpan Airport, the military airport in Shanshan County located 97 km east of Turpan City was arranged to be open for travellers from Turpan to Dunhuang in the tourist season. With the use of Turpan Airport, Shanshan Military Airport would be adjusted for other uses.
By train
Turpan Railway Station is located in Daheyan Town about 50 kilometres away from the Turpan city centre. Trains run on Lanxin Line and Nanjiang Line and they all stop in Turpan Railway Station which will only take about two and a half hours by train from Turpan to Urumqi. Tourists can take a bus or taxi to go back and forth between the train stations and the Turpan urban area.
By coach bus
The road traffic is well-developed in Turpan where 312 National Highway and 314 National Highway intersect here. There are tourist buses available to all the attractions in Turpan territory which makes it convenient for tourists to take the bus to cities such as Urumqi, Kashgar, Hetian, Shanshan, Toksun, Korla, Yecheng, and Zep. Generally, most of the coach buses’ operation time is from 7:30 am to 20:30 in the summer and from 8:30 am to 19:30 in the winter. In addition, buses from Turpan to Shanshan Railway Station depart before 13:00 every day and the duration time is usually 25 minutes.
